Present Kodungallur Had Been Named Mahodayapuram, Makothevarpattanam Muyirikkodu and Muziris By The Greek & Romans, Shingly By The Jews, Cranganore By The Portuguese, Kodungallur now situated 30 KM north of Cochin, Muziris is said to have been first occupied around 1,000 BC and continued to be active till the 13th century AD

Kodungallur (Muziris Heritage) is literally the cradle of several religions. Apart from the first Jews of India, this is the port where the apostle St Thomas landed, bringing Christianity to India. It is also the site of Cheraman Mosque, the first Muslim house of worship in India. In addition, it houses a famous Hindu temple, dedicated to the goddess Bhagavathy In 1341, the profile of the water bodies in the Periyar River basin, on the Malabar Coast in Kerala underwent a major transformation.

The prosperous port of Muziris (Muziris Heritage Tour) , at the mouth of the Periyar, overlooking the Arabian Sea was engulfed and silted over by the flooding of the river, leaving its actual site to conjecture. The excavations (Muziris Heritage Excavations)by the Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) in 2007 & 2008 unearthed the archaeological and historical evidence which confirmed its location.
